Frequently asked questions about the use of miriac® System-on-Modules

System-on-Modules (SoMs) from MicroSys are application-ready super components for customized embedded systems. In combination with custom carrier boards, they become a system platform that exactly matches given requirements. The SoM design principle is ideal for industrial batch sizes, which makes System-on-Modules by far the most sold board level product in the embedded computing market.

miriac® System-on-Modules from MicroSys leverage the full power of the integrated processor. Developers are not confined by standard specifications that limit the interface choice with strict parameters. Instead, they have unlimited access to all processor-integrated functions and interfaces. This is something that conventional System-on-Module standards cannot offer. Let us show you what difference this makes with some typical examples.

We are not just hardware developers who design the board layouts for a set of components and then manufacture the matching boards. Our System-on-Modules are true customer solutions – application-ready and including a custom bootloader as well as OS image for the customer-specific application. Since this is a complex task, it is best left in the capable hands of the SoM supplier, and application developers won’t need to deal with any of the hardware-related programming.

miriac® System-on-Modules from MicroSys are developed on the basis of NXP's leading S32 automotive, Layerscape® and QorIQ® processor technology, and in alignment with the respective NXP® embedded roadmaps. This ensures that developers can obtain matching System-on-Modules from MircoSys the minute the selected NXP® processors are production ready. We would be delighted to present our System-on-Module roadmap for NXP® processor technology to you.

Most customized carrier boards only need a few layers. Because of the packing density of the processors, System-on-Modules tend to have a significantly larger number of layers. A full-custom design would also have to include these layers, which quickly doubles the costs for this PCB.

There is no justifiable difference on technical grounds between the terms System-on-Module (SoM) and Computer-on-Module (CoM). It depends on the vendor’s preference which terminology is used. The term SoM tends to be more popular in the Arm processor world while CoM predominates in the x86 processor environment. However, both terms describe the same design principle – a combination of processor modules and application-specific carrier boards.
